Teso College Aloet’s competition team took home the 3rd runner-up prize of savings accounts worth UGX 500,000 each. Students Allan Omito and Emmanuel Erabu, along with the project’s patron teacher, Mr. Lameck Okello, travelled to Kampala to compete in the Stanbic National Schools Championship on 29th April 2017.

In March the two boys beat out teams from Tororo Girls School, Mbale SS, Paul’s College, and Hamdan Girls School in the Stanbic National Schools Regional Challenge, and won the right to compete in the Grand Finale.

The Championship’s final test was to start and run a bank within TCA  and then make a presentation about it to the competition judges in Kampala. Allan Omito and Emmanuel Erabu, with the invaluable assistance of Khedi Joshua, Ebuju Jonathan, Oumo Danniel Hope, Okwakol Benjamin, Elaku Benjamin, came up with a project that impressed the judges, who told them that their project would be of interest to potential financial investors.

Stanbic National Bank, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Sports, initiated the programme with the goal of preparing Uganda’s youth for professional careers when they graduated. Benson Kule, the Commissioner for Secondary Education, made a statement about the importance to partnerships between the Ugandan government and the business sector when it comes to eduction: “At the Ministry of Education and Sports, we support such initiatives because education in this next generation is a combined role of the public and private sector. Targeting secondary school students is a brilliant strategy by crafting a knowledgeable pool of future professionals. Students are also a good source of transferring knowledge and information to their parents and communities.”

Patrick Mweheire, Chief Executive Officer of Stanbic Uganda explained the bank’s reasoning behind their initiative: “If you look at Uganda’s demographic, 75% of the population is under 25. We have 10 to 15 million school going children, we add about another million every year, which means that we have to create a million jobs for those coming out of school every year, It does not take a rocket scientist to realise that the biggest place you can have an impact on the Ugandan economy is by intervening on education.”

Teso College made a good showing this year. With the experience under their belt, they plan to do even better next year. They can apply what they learned to their daily lives, and it will assist them in their future as well.
